Hydrangea (Shuzo Fujimoto)

Ok well…. I’m a bit obsessed with this tessellation. It’s so beautiful!

Unfortunately, even though I’ve made multiple attempts I have not been very successful. I’ve been running into multiple issues both with the paper quality and general precision required for this model.

The fold pictured above is my most recent one. It’s not great, there’s a lot of mistakes, but in the end I decided to share it anyway because part of the point here is to see my own progress and learn too!

Here I used 70gsm kraft paper, which I cut from a roll. I suspect that’s where my problems started… maybe my square was not square enough? I struggled in particular with the “spread sink” step (spread squash? I think it’s the same). This was my favourite step too, but it often didn’t go my way. not sure if it was an experience or precision or a paper issue…or a bad square!.

Here’s another smaller attempt. For this I used some crappy amazon origami paper of mysterious thickness (thinner than the kraft). Precission was a lot better here (better square?) buuuut the paper broke in the pyramid step on layer 2 🙁 So this is as far as I could take it.

If you want to see this tessellation folded by someone who knows what they’re doing, go here to see: Michał Kosmulski’s hydrangea fold

For tutorials, I think Sara Adams of the happyfolding.com channel said it best.

Here’s her video explaining how to fold the basic molecule, and then one explaining how to turn it into a tessellation. Her results are incredible too, an absolute masterclass!

I hope to report back soon with some slightly more successful attempts 🙂
